Introduction - From the
Author..
At
some point in your life, you may have come across, read
about, or participated in what is usually called a "Triangle or
Pyramid Scam." When I think back about my personal experience back in
the late 90's (I was in 8th Grade) it went something like this.
It was a simple document that you downloaded from the Internet
(technically an information product but definitely a scam). It was usually
only about 3-5 pages with a paragraph of instructions at the top and
then the rest of the document was a long list of names and their
corresponding addresses from all over the United States in numerical
order.
The instructions read:
To join this "Pyramid Lottery
Club" , mail $5.00 to the name at the very top of this list
[number 1] and then add your full name and mailing address to
the bottom of this document and upload it back to the website/s you downloaded it
from, email it to every contact you have, and finally print and mail as
many copies of this list/document (updated with your name and address of
course) to as many of your friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and
family as you have an address for.
If everyone who receives and reads this document/list mails $5.00 in
cash to the name at the top and then adds their name to the bottom
and continues forwarding this document, we will all be rich and
receive X amount of money for free in the mail!
The way it was written and the nature of this document was very
intriguing and after reading and randomly finding this magical
document in your hands, you wanted to believe it really worked and would
really make you rich so bad you would actually of checked to see if you had a
$5.00 in your possession before taking some time to debate whether this
was a scam or really a scam.
The funny thing is, being that I was in 8th grade and it was the
late nineties (and before the big public meltdown and life imprisonment of
practitioners like Bernie, etc), I decided out of curiosity to try it out and
see what happened.
There was a blurb after the instructions and before the long list
of names about, "Paying it Forward", "Do Good for the
World", "Help Others", and "Practice Good Karma." I
think that's what sold me; with my innate determination at a young age to
be a good person and do good things for others, I pulled out my lunch money and
followed it commands.
